For the lucky ones who graduate from Primary School, their chance at making a difference for their families and regions comes from studying hard and again, passing the yearly exams. Core subjects include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, and Physical Education, with additional elective subjects like Art, Business Studies, Computer Studies, and sometimes French or Kiswahili depending on the school and region. Books are expensive, just like in the U.S. Major challenges to secondary education in Uganda include: inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of qualified teachers, low teacher salaries, unequal access to education, particularly for girls and children from poor families, high student-teacher ratios, limited learning materials, poverty-related dropouts, early marriage, and a lack of basic amenities like toilets and desks in many schools, particularly in rural areas; all contributing to a poor quality of education overall. I often use the example of teaching Chemistry from what you remember as a student, without a textbook. That would be nearly impossible. TTPU is trying to make passing High School possible for these students.
